Founder Story – DJ Exsys (Michel van Dop)

My story with music and radio didn’t start with a company, but with curiosity and a deep love for sound. Back in the 1990s, I spent countless hours with friends in a small room, playing music late into the night. Two turntables, stacks of vinyl, and endless mixing. We recorded our sets, learned by doing, and between 1996 and 2004 bought more records than was probably reasonable. We bought 12-inch records with club house and trance, then made mixes on cassette tapes which we broadcast on Saturday evenings in The Hague on Fantasy Radio, back when it was still illegal, using a 150-watt FM transmitter.

During that same period, we regularly attended major events such as Mystery Land, Trance Engery, InnerCity and clubs like “de Tijd”, Intenz  in the Hague. That’s where the music truly came alive: discovering new sounds, feeling the atmosphere, and understanding what music can do to people. That inspiration always found its way back home, behind the decks and later into the studio.

As times changed and those stations slowly disappeared, 1997 became the turning point: moving radio to the internet. We started broadcasting online from home using a cable modem. The technology was basic Real Audio server, 32 Kbps, and a maximum of five listeners at the same time, but it worked, and that was enough to keep going. That mix of music and technology never let go of me. In 2006, I founded Live-Streams.nl, allowing me to combine my passion for radio with streaming technology and help other radio stations broadcast online. Over the years, I’ve supported stations ranging from small hobby projects to commercial broadcasters, always focusing on stability, sound quality, and reliability.

In 2012, Intense Radio was born. Not as a marketing concept, but as a continuation of everything that came before. I personally design the logo and website, define the music format, and fine-tune the station’s sound. Dialing in audio processing adding that final “sauce” to the music — is still one of the things I enjoy most.

For me, Intense Radio isn’t a product. It’s a place where experience, technology, and love for music come together. Just like it did in the beginning: playing music because it feels right — and sharing that feeling with others.
